Da Nang approves investment in Lien Chieu Container Port project

The project is designed to strengthen Vietnam’s maritime capacity, reduce logistics costs, and enhance regional economic connectivity. According to the municipal People’s Committee, the port will cover a total area of 172.6ha, including 147 ha of land and 25.7 ha of water surface. With an overall designed capacity of 5.7 million TEUs per year, equivalent to about 74 million tonnes of cargo, the port is expected to handle between 14.25 and 36.3 million tons annually by 2030. The estimated investment capital for the project is VND 45,268 billion (approximately US$1.8 billion). Construction will be implemented in phases from the fourth quarter of 2025 through the first quarter of 2036. The master plan includes 8 container berths stretching 2,750 meters, capable of accommodating vessels of up to 18,000 TEUs. The port will feature modern, highly automated loading and unloading systems to ensure efficient cargo handling. Dedicated berths for barges up to 5,000 tonnes will be developed to facilitate cargo consolidation and distribution between Lien Chieu and other seaports or inland waterways, thereby easing pressure on road transport and lowering logistics costs. Supporting infrastructure includes container yards, warehouses, administrative offices, repair workshops, and a centralized truck parking area. Plans also call for an integrated rail link to Kim Lien Station, further improving multimodal connectivity. Crucially, the project is designed in line with international standards for “green ports” and international transshipment hubs, emphasizing sustainability, efficiency, and environmental protection.
