Co-organized by the Vietnam Medical Association and the city’s Pediatric Association, the conference gathered leading international and domestic experts to share practical experiences, workforce training strategies, and the latest research on the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC).
In his opening speech, Dr. Tran Dang Khoa, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Health’s Maternal and Child Health Department, highlighted the importance of synchronously implementing KMC in Vietnam. Since 2014, this method has been included in the national guidelines on essential newborn care as a low-cost, highly effective intervention in improving infant survival.
He added thanks to the great efforts of the healthcare sector and the active support of international organizations, KMC has been widely deployed nationwide. In particular, the Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children is one of the country’s leading units in applying KMC method and serves as a major training center for provinces nationwide as well as several countries in the region.

Ms. Tran Thanh Thuy, the Director of the Da Nang Department of Health, affirmed that maternal and child healthcare has always been a strategic priority for the city.
Over recent years, Da Nang has invested in infrastructure, equipment and human resources, as well as has implemented many evidence-based interventions that have maintained child health indicators to be among the best in the country.
Notably, the city has become a bright spot in newborn care through the successful implementation of KMC and the Human Milk Bank model at the Hospital for Women and Children.
Director Thuy said that with the participation of leaders and experts from many countries, the conference provided recommendations and support for countries to build and perfect a network for caring for premature babies using the KMC method.
Da Nang’s hosting of the third regional conference of Asia-Oceania network of Kangaroo Mother Care not only reaffirmed the city’s pioneering role in newborn care but also contributed to spreading best practices and advancing sustainable solutions for the future of children across the region.
