Leading global investors bid for Da Nang’s US$1.7 billion Lien Chieu seaport project

The Lien Chieu Seaport project in Da Nang has emerged as a major draw for top global port operators, with three major consortiums officially submitting bids for the project’s second component (Component B). As reported by the Da Nang Priority Infrastructure Investment Project Management Board, the tender is expected to be opened at the end of December, marking a crucial milestone for one of Vietnam’s most ambitious port developments, valued at more than VND45 trillion (approximately US$1.7 billion). On December 2, the Da Nang Priority Infrastructure Investment Project Management Board announced that the world’s leading maritime transport and port-operation groups have officially submitted bids for Component B of the Lien Chieu Seaport Project. These bidders are major operators with strong financial capacity and extensive global experience in seaport development and maritime logistics. Photo: THANH LAN The three consortiums are Hateco Group JSC, Hateco Port Co., Ltd – APM Terminals B.V (Netherlands); Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (India) – T&T Group JSC; Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC) – Terminal Investment Limited Holding (Luxembourg). The management board confirmed that investor selection procedures are entering their final phase. If the tender proceeds smoothly, the construction of Component B is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026. This development would provide a major boost for Da Nang’s vision to establish a modern logistics ecosystem and become a regional maritime hub. The Lien Chieu Port is being developed on a 450-hectare site in Hai Van Ward and consists of two main components. Component A, funded by central and municipal budgets with an investment of more than VND3.4 trillion, was launched in late 2022. Photo: THANH LAN The container terminal covers more than 136 hectares of land and nearly 26 hectares of water, featuring eight container berths totalling 2,750 meters, capable of handling vessels from 50,000 to 200,000 DWT. An additional five feeder berths will serve ships under 5,000 DWT. The terminal’s logistics hinterland includes warehouses, repair facilities, an operations center, rail yards, and a 1.5-kilometer connection to Lien Chieu Station. The projected handling capacity is 5.2 – 5.8 million TEUs per year, with total investment of over VND 45 trillion. The general cargo and bulk terminal spans more than 52 hectares of land and 13 hectares of water, with six berths totalling 1,550 meters, accommodating vessels of 50,000 – 100,000 DWT and reaching an annual capacity of 17 – 19 million tonnes. To the south, the LNG/LPG and liquid cargo area includes two berths for 10,000 – 100,000 DWT vessels, supported by a storage complex on nearly 40 hectares, with a capacity of around 2 million tonnes per year. Photo: THANH LAN An additional four petroleum berths, capable of receiving ships up to 30,000 DWT, will bring total investment in this zone to VND5.429 trillion. Component A, comprising the breakwater system, 7.3-kilometer navigation channel, and key road connections, has reached 95% completion. The breakwater and revetment works are 96.64% finished, dredging of the channel and basin has reached 99.09%, while road and drainage works stand at over 80%.
